‘Unfreezing’ Parkinson’s Disease Patients

A common problem for Parkinson’s Disease patients is that they encounter a phenomenon that is called ‘freezing’. When patients stop moving, for example waiting to enter a revolving door, it is very difficult to start moving again. An external cue is needed to ‘unfreeze’ and continue walking.

Together with a major Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic and a University in the Netherlands we identified the possibility of the Totem Health Sensor assisting in detecting these freezing moments and using the smartphone to give an audible signal serving at that moment as a cue.

Besides this application, more opportunities will be explored in cooperation with doctors and University students.
